Look, if you’re a new cook, or are wanting to learn a bit more about discovering your kitchen and learning to cook, then there are a few essential tools you’ll need. I’m not saying this is all you’ll need, but this is a great start for all those new aspiring cooks.
1. 8-inch Chef’s Knife:
I’d say this is the most important tool of all. Forget about all other fancy micro-serrated blades, this is all you need to do the majority of all your food prep.
2. 12-inch Cast Iron Skillet
I wish I would have purchased one of these earlier in my cooking career. You need one of these in your kitchen, it’s so versatile, you can make almost anything in it. Most of all it can stand up to incredible amounts of heat, it’s simply a must. Don’t be afraid of treating it. It’s true that cast iron skillets don’t come out from the box with a nonstick surface but that comes with seasoning. All you need to do really is coat the skillet with oil and bake it in a 350 F degree oven for an hour. Dry it with paper towels and it’s ready to use.
3. Spring-Loaded Tongs
This is probably the most important item in a kitchen. They’re like a heatproof extension of your hands, trust me you’ll be good to them.
4. Cast Iron Dutch Oven
What can I say here except that I love my Dutch Oven. It’s perfect for stews, soups and even baking amazing crusty breads. You simply need one, no ifs and buts about it.
5. Microplane Classic Zester
This zester will come in handy more than you know. Zesting lemons, limes, oranges happens more often than you know in a cook’s life. But you can also use it for hard cheese like Parmesan cheese, or chocolate, or even nutmeg. It’s a must have in any cook’s kitchen.
6. Butcher Block Cutting Board
While having a good knife is important, it’s also important to have a good cutting board. All you need is a large heavy hardwood board to use for all your tasks.
7. Measuring Cups
So many times when you follow a recipe you’ll be asked to measure 1/4 cup of this, 2/3 cup of that, etc. These are a must for any cook or baker.
8. Measuring Spoon Set
Same as with the measuring cups, you’ll use them quite a lot for measuring spices and what not.
A set of 3 stainless steel mixing bowls that fit inside one another are great and are a space saver. You’ll use these more than you think and they also last a lifetime.
10. Instant-Read Thermometer
You can find these anywhere now and are a must have in any kitchen. It’s essential for making sure your meat and poultry are safely cooked.
